Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

26. The Well (Co-written With Sharma Angel-Walfall)

Doctor Who The Well Rose Ayling-Ellis

The Well has that sophisticated sci-fi feel that Doctor Who should absolutely be going for in this day and age, and builds tension incredibly (ahem) well.

It just didn’t need to be a Midnight sequel. Because the creature possessing Aliss behaves nothing like the Midnight Entity.

Sure, it operates in a broadly similar way, possessing a helpless individual and using them to turn people against each other.

But the stealing of words and voices that made Midnight so effective is completely absent, replaced with the (frankly fairly gimmicky) idea of people “dying at midnight”.

It’s a story that could have easily stood on its own two feet, and would have been all the better for it. Rather than a deliberate attempt to build on the lore, the Midnight connections just felt tacked on.

Also, it lessened the Entity’s impact by briefly showing us what it looks like. Come on guys!
