Doctor Who: Every Series Plot Thread Ranked Worst To Best

13. Why This Face?

River Song Doctor Who

When the 12th Doctor first looked at his reflection and asked 'Why this face?', most fans probably thought that the mystery would draw out season after season. After all, some of the Matt Smith plot threads did. But this conundrum came to fruition a lot more abruptly. In the second season of Peter Capaldi's run, we got the full closure on this puzzle and, by all rights, it meant we could move on to the next big thing.

Steven Moffat made good on the fact that Capaldi had already performed in a Doctor Who episode, originally as an ill-fated occupant of Pompeii, back in the David Tennant saga. Cut to a flashback of Doc number 10 looking decidedly sullen, and unable to save the toga-wearing Capaldi and his people from certain death.

Cut back to the present, and Capaldi's new mission statement of "I'm The Doctor, and I save people": A second chance at doing the right thing, granted by those enigmatic powers from Gallifrey. Well that cleared that up then.

A triumphant reveal... if a little sudden.
