5. Help Me

Well this story is not so very new But the man is me, yes and the girl is you So leave your house come into my shed Please stop my world from raining through my head Please don't think , I'm not your sort You'll find that sheds are nicer than you thought. €“ lyrics from €œMan in a Shed€, by Nick Drake Symbiosis is the living together of two dissimilar organisms. Symbiotic relationships are not necessarily mutually beneficial though they can be. It is often postulated that the Doctor is in a kind of symbiotic relationship with the TARDIS. Each entity is receiving something, whatever that may be, from the other. They are in a kind of dance €“ weaving through and around each other in a complicated rhythm. Why does the TARDIS not like Clara? Could it be that she is disturbing the balance of this relationship? When Clara appeals to the TARDIS to help rescue the Doctor from the pocket universe she is met with outright hostility. The TARDIS chooses to use the image of Clara to represent the voice interface, informing her that she wears that form because Clara holds herself in highest esteem. It€™s interesting to note, however, that when we saw the voice interface deployed in €œLet€™s Kill Hitler€, the first image used was that of the Doctor. What if there is also some sort of symbiotic relationship between Gallifrey and Earth? Is this why the Doctor spends so much time among humans? Is Clara a threat to the balance of this relationship? Clara, as Emma Grayling informs the Doctor, is €œonly an ordinary girl. Isn€™t that enough?€ What if it isn€™t though? What if Clara is missing something that should define her as human? If humans are indeed in an interdependent relationship with Time Lords, what if Clara were somehow free of that bond?
