Doctor Who: Legend Of The Sea Devils Review - 6 Ups & 7 Downs

8. UP - The Ocean Bed Scene

Doctor Who Legend of the Sea Devils
BBC

This was the highlight of the episode for us, brief as it was. After the Doctor and Yaz travel back to the present (well, technically still the past, but a future past… writing about this show is hard sometimes), they find themselves at the bottom of the ocean.

With a sense of trepidation, The Doctor opens the TARDIS doors, leading into one of the most beautiful and memorable shots the show has ever seen, and one that, frankly, it’s a little surprising the show hasn’t thought to do before. Having our duo step out onto this vibrant seabed that’s brimming with life feels straight out of an Attenborough documentary and lends a real sense of magic and discovery to an otherwise far-blander-than-it-should-be episode.

We like the conversation between Thirteen and Yaz here too, with the Doctor acknowledging Yaz’s feelings in a gentle and natural way, before immediately getting distracted by the matter at hand. We’re surprised ‘No ship, Sherlock’ came from squeaky-clean Chibnall though - this sort of quip straddles the line between cheeky and cringy that’s normally occupied by one Steven Moffat…
