Doctor Who: Nightmare in Silver Review – Pondering 8 Moves Neil Gaiman Made

6. Upgrading The System

What happens if the only reason left to upgrade is you€™ve become addicted to the act of upgrading? What do the cybermen get out of all their great technological advancement? What do you do after you€™ve assimilated the entire universe? The cyberiad has an interesting reaction upon infiltrating the Doctor. It€™s very different than converting a human. The cyber-Doctor is almost drunk with power €“ practically psychotic. One wonders if there will be consequences within the cyberiad to being exposed to a being like the Doctor. How has he changed them? Cybermen gave up individuality in exchange for security. Their need for self-preservation paradoxically led to the destruction of the self. They upgraded themselves right out of existence €“ the artificial elements took over. They used the amusement park as a kind of repair shop, a way to lure children for spare parts. Was this where the time lords were headed? Had they changed their physiology so much they were in danger of evolving into merciless monsters? The empire resorted to blowing up galaxies to stop the spread of the cybermen €“ did the Doctor destroy Gallifrey for similar reasons?
