When we catch up with her in Series 4 it's revealed that she's engaged to Tom Milligan (aka Lucifer), who she met during the Year That Never Was.

Martha's still wearing the engagement ring when we see her again in the Series 4 finale. But when she shows up one last time as part of the Tenth Doctor’s farewell tour, Tom is nowhere to be seen. Instead, out of nowhere, she's gone and married Rose's ex, Mickey Smith.

Marrying Martha to a guy she'd basically never met has to be one of the dumbest moves in the show, but never mind Martha and Mickey. What happened to Martha and Tom? Who called it off? When? And why? And what the hell!

It's not that the show doesn't provide a reason for their breakup, it's that it acts like Martha and Tom were never a thing at all. It reeks of RTD trying to cram as many characters into the farewell tour as possible – which, let's be honest, was absolutely the reason for this.

Maybe Tom literally just died or something. Maybe he was Adiposed to death. Or maybe he decided to remain in Africa to continue his work. But surely we'd have heard about it!
