Doctor Who: Ranking New Who Finales From Worst To Best
9. The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos
Series 11 was certainly different in terms of its formatting and structure. Chris Chibnall completely went against previous traditions, doing away with both two part narratives, and an overall story arc running through each episode. The only real thread that acted as a form of continuing story was Graham and Ryan's journey dealing with their grief, as well as building upon their awkward family connection.
Although this element didn't feel as refined as it could've been, it still allowed for some interesting character moments, which somewhat came to head during The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos, when Grace's killer - Tzim-Sha - returned to the series. A lot of the revolving threads sadly felt forced, with Graham suddenly deciding he wanted to straight up murder Tzim-Sha in cold blood, as a means to find peace for what happened in The Woman Who Fell to Earth.
This felt totally out of character for Graham, and I'm glad the Thirteenth Doctor tried to make him see sense, whilst warning him about where this train of thought would ultimately lead him. Other negatives are Tzim-Sha themselves. He most definitely felt more menacing here, but his now god-like position on Ranskoor Av Kolos was an odd direction for the villain, and didn't really sell the narrative the episode was trying desperately to convey.
Also, it just felt lacklustre as a finale, having had no build up, and just came out of nowhere, and tried too hard to justify its existence. As a stand alone episode it's fine, same with most of Series 11's scaled back stories, but doesn't do much as a concluding narrative to a series. It makes sense why most people choose to acknowledge Resolution as the true finale to Series 11, as opposed to this story.
