Doctor Who: Ranking New Who Finales From Worst To Best
8. Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday
Rose Tyler became a significant factor within the early days of New Who. So it's only natural that her departure at the end of Series 2 was a dramatic moment, and certainly a game-changer going forward. Assuming, of course, you cared about her romance with the Tenth Doctor. If not, then this finale could easily turn into a painful experience.
Personally, I've come to find so many flaws with this romantic subplot, believing it to be an insufferable relationship, based upon Rose's clingy nature, and obsession with being with the Time Lord forever and ever. Another major downer for this finale is the disappointing conflict between the Daleks and the Cybermen. After the perfect build up in Army of Ghosts, we are left with an almighty cliff-hanger that promises great things; namely the first confrontation between The Doctor's mightiest enemies.
Unfortunately, the Daleks were written to be overpowered, and the Cybermen are reduced to canon fodder, making the overall war one sided, which I'm sure annoyed fans of the Cybermen. On top of this, the pacing was odd in Doomsday, and the focus felt questionable, as did the runtime spending way too long on Rose's departure. Perhaps if Doomsday was longer, then this could've been justified somewhat, and we could've spent more time on the actual meat of the story, instead of the sloppy love story.
