Doctor Who: Ranking New Who Finales From Worst To Best
7. Hell Bent
Heaven Sent was a masterpiece. Hands down! Steven Moffat created something mesmerising, and allowed Peter Capaldi to showcase his amazing acting skills. And then Hell Bent happened. Sigh. Okay, it's not as awful as most people make out. It's definitely a disappointing experience in terms of completely throwing aside Gallifrey for a pointless, and unwarranted, epilogue for Clara's story arc.
However, when you look at it for what it is, it becomes somewhat tolerable. It doesn't make it good, not by a long shot, but it can be seen as a somewhat entertaining experience at least, as it tries displaying some deep character sequences, particularly in showasing the strong connection the Twelfth Doctor and Clara hold. Things then get confusing.
The Doctor goes to some terrifying lengths in order to achieve his goals, ultimately becoming the notorious Hybrid that everyone was fretting over (though, it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense, due to the simple fact it isn't conveyed very well). He straight up kills The General, and nearly causes the collapse of the universe, all for the sake of trying to save Clara from death. This is all extremely irritating because Heaven Sent feels like The Doctor's grieving process, which is now completely retconned, whilst also destroying The Doctor's foundation, and overall character.
At least Clara acts as the voice of reason, constantly telling The Doctor he's gone too far, and even ends up being the one who sets things straight. Until she selfishly decides to hold off her death by going the long way round to meet her destiny (in her own TARDIS no less). That was definitely dumb (amongst many other things in Hell Bent). Yeah, this finale is definitely a soul crushing experience, filled with so many questionable decisions. At least it looks nice.
