Doctor Who: Ranking The New Who Openers From Worst To Best
6. Asylum Of The Daleks
Promised to be the biggest Dalek story in the history of the show, Asylum of the Daleks had a lot to live up to. But, like all things that are hyped up, they ultimately fail to meet our expectations. Plus, it was disappointing to see the lack of Dalek representation, considering every single Dalek in existence was supposed to appear.
Another questionable element was the forced subplot revolving around Amy and Rory getting a divorce. Sure, it was trying to build upon the awful predicament of Amy no longer being able to have children, due to the Silence experimenting on her. Sadly, it was a simple case that this element wasn't given enough time to breath, especially since Asylum of the Daleks was already overstuffed with plot elements, which wasn't helped by its short runtime.
Despite these negatives, the opener had an exciting, action packed vibe, which looked stunning with its cinematic direction, and special effects. Seeing all those Daleks was certainly impressive, and it was kind of neat seeing they now had a parliament (even if it made no sense). Do you think they voted in their Prime Minister? Although it was sad that this was the last appearance of the Dalek Paradigm. Such a waste of potential.
The whole subplot with Oswin Oswald was a neat addition to the episode, and created an intriguing mystery. Frustratingly, this pushed the attention away from the most exciting premise within Asylum of the Daleks, i.e. the Asylum itself. And why weren't the patients in intensive care Classic Daleks? Also, The Doctor being forgotten was completely pointless in the long run. Basically, this was a fun mixed bag.
