Doctor Who: Ranking The New Who Openers From Worst To Best

Series 11 had a difficult task on its hand, given it featured the first female incarnation of The Doctor. Not only that, but it was Chris Chibnall's first series as show-runner. With this came a lot of changes, from a newly established production team, another rendition of the title sequence (accompanied with Murray Gold's replacement, Segun Akinola), alongside three brand new travelling companions to climb aboard the TARDIS.

Sure, this opening narrative wasn't perfect, and had some teething problems, especially when it came to the overcrowded line up, and a not so impressive villain. However, the new cast quickly established themselves. The story was carefully paced in its first half, allowing the focus to remain on the new companions long enough to get some needed backstory, before allowing the Thirteenth Doctor to take centre stage to showcase what she could do.

With a cliched set up of the new Doctor having momentary amnesia, things felt fairly balanced when it came to familiarity, as well as preparing the audience for something fresh. There was a nice focus on character connection, with the unexpected death of Grace laying the ground work for an integral journey for both Ryan and Graham, as they prepared to grief over their loss, and slowly formulate a stable family bond.
