Doctor Who Review: Death In Heaven - 10 Ways To Wrap Up A Series

10. The Crooked Path Of A Good Liar

Series eight is the season of deception. Clara€™s journey began with lying to both Danny and the Doctor for selfish reasons. Yet her experiences with both men changed her and by the beginning of €œDark Water€ she was ready to be open and honest. Perhaps the most powerful scene in the finale episode is of Clara and the Doctor sitting at a table telling each other the things they think the other needs to hear. The lies are no longer self-serving but exist to ease another person€™s pain. Clara wants to believe she could be the Doctor. She is seduced by the thrill of power she received when taking control of an adventure or pretending to be the one in charge. She is undone by the randomness of life and death. Control is an illusion both she and the Doctor cling to but in reality it is the ultimate lie. The universe is built on chaos and cannot be contained. What we want is beside the point. We can only adapt.
