Doctor Who Review: Deep Breath - 10 Ways To Breathe New Life Into An Old Soul

3. In Who We Trust

Trust is a fragile thing, hard to gain and too easily lost. Clara€™s faith wavers in the aftermath of the Doctor€™s regeneration. Her fear leaves her clinging to the past and hesitant to embrace the future. The Doctor€™s actions do not, at least initially, fill her with confidence. Jenna Coleman delivers a stunning performance in her scenes with the cyborg. She is a lost girl left on her own and forced to rely on her own instincts with no guarantee the Doctor will return for her. Yet even through her tears and despite her terror she reaches out for the hand she still on some level believes will be there. She has every reason to panic but the Doctor trusts her not to. He has more faith in her than she does in herself and while he throws her into the deep end he does not abandon her. Clara must decide not only to trust the Doctor but to believe in herself. Her real fear is not that the Doctor is a different person but that she is not strong or brave enough to continue the journey with him. She remains unconvinced of her importance until the Doctor€™s voice from the past reassures her. Grieving is OK but now it€™s time to move on.
