Doctor Who Review: Face The Raven – 8 Ways To Compound The Crime

4. Bearing Witness

Letitia Wright gives a touching performance as Anahson the two-faced Janus forced to hide her gender identity to keep herself safe from those who would either use or demonize her. The weight of Clara€™s leaving left little room to develop some of the ideas presented in €œFace the Raven€ and while understandable that€™s a shame as there is much fertile ground to explore here. I hope writer Sarah Dollard returns in future series as it is obvious she has a lot of interesting things to say. There€™s a running theme in series nine Doctor Who about the public faces we present to hide the private one. Both Clara and the Doctor affect an outer mask to hide the turmoil inside. Anahson comments on how complicated they are as they have no fixed past or future. She can only catch glimpses of their true selves and that leaves her unsettled and wary. She is a witness but an unreliable one as her visions are filtered through her perceptions and her inability to parse non-linear time.
