Doctor Who Review: The Girl Who Died – 7 Ways To Measure Matters Of Life And Death

5. The Seer And The Serpent

Ashildr is a story teller. While she loves the other villagers she knows she is not like them. She sees things in a different way and makes connections that they do not. The Doctor recognizes her potential and that is why he chooses her to wear the helmet. He knows where other people perceive rubbish she will manifest a savior. Yet she does this at the cost of her own life. The question is whether the Doctor knew he was sending Ashildr to her death. It is likely that he did as he has shown few qualms this series in using others to test his theories. Ashildr may have chosen to sacrifice herself for the good of her people in any case but she was not given the courtesy of informed consent. The Doctor often uses people as a means to an end and this was no different so why did he choose to save Ashildr? Was it due to his sudden realization of where he had seen his own face before?
