Doctor Who Review: The Girl Who Died – 7 Ways To Measure Matters Of Life And Death

3. The Face Of The Doctor

Did the Doctor choose this face as a reminder that it is possible to save people? He does tend toward a fatalistic viewpoint. He has a hard time discerning people as individuals even when he knows them well. He€™s well aware of the clock but less concerned with the individual gears unless one happens to upset the flow of time. Perhaps this face has another side. Peter Capaldi also appeared as John Frobisher in Torchwood€™s €œChildren of Earth€. In that story he is a government bureaucrat who murders his children to prevent them being turned over to the horrifying alien 456. He then kills his wife and himself to spare themselves further grief. Were Frobisher€™s actions a way of rectifying the ripple in time the Doctor set in motion when he rescued Caecilius and his family in Pompeii? If one family lived then was it necessary for another to die in order to maintain balance in the universe? Anais Nin once wrote €œYou can€™t save people you can only love them€ and this is just as true for the Doctor. He may have prevented Ashildr€™s death but did he rescue her or deliver her to a worse fate?
