Doctor Who Review: The Girl Who Died – 7 Ways To Measure Matters Of Life And Death

2. The Face Of God

When the Doctor decides to play god it seldom ends well. He has cheated death and in so doing it is likely he set events in motion that will have a greater negative impact in the future. He knows this. He explicitly states that he is probably making a mistake. But he does it anyway. Why? Has he forgotten the consequences of saving Adelaide Brooke from the doomed Mars expedition in €œThe Waters of Mars€? Captain Brooke committed suicide when she realized that she needed to die in order to preserve a timeline that sent human explorers out into space. Did the Doctor save Ashildr out of altruism or because he wanted to show off for Clara? We have evidence that this is an unhealthy relationship. While Clara and the Doctor are undeniably close they are not necessarily good for each other. They each seek the approval of the other to the point of selfish recklessness. In that regard they are like Missy who will do anything to gain the Doctor€™s attention.
