Doctor Who Review: The Zygon Invasion – 7 Reasons Why This Is The Perfect Setup
3. Osgood Versus Evil
Osgood is an example of all the wonderful things that happen when you take a peripheral character and give them a great backstory and strong motivations. Once a sweet and goofy sidekick this fascinating woman is now a complicated and multi-faceted individual who shines with the strength of her convictions. Ingrid Oliver is pitch perfect as she navigates her way between human and Zygon issues and maintains her respect for each side. The Doctor is impressed and so are we. Once again we have mention of a hybrid though in this instance the point is that it doesnt matter what Osgood is. She represents peace which exists outside of the bickering and is always there if only people will reach for it. Osgood is the woman best suited for true leadership as she is not defined by her training or prejudices and is not swayed by the accoutrements of power. She is a hero but not a superhero and that makes her eminently more relatable. When the Zygons come for her she hides under a desk and clutches her inhaler. Peter Harness never lets us forget that while Osgood has enormous inner strength she is not a platitude but a real person.
