Doctor Who Review: The Zygon Invasion – 7 Reasons Why This Is The Perfect Setup

4. Terrorist Or Freedom Fighter?

What struck me the most about €œThe Zygon Invasion€ is that it does not mock or demonize the Zygons. Instead Harness gives us a multi-layered Zygon population that is not monolithic. The implication is that the antagonists are a small but motivated group that does not necessarily share the same goals as the rest of their society. Harness also takes care to make their stated desire of living openly without subsuming their identities a sympathetic one even while their methods of achieving that are condemned. In this age of guided warfare it is easy to pretend that those we slaughter are just characters on a video screen. The woman who aborts the drone attack is dissuaded by the sight of her family waving at her from the steps of her target. Yet she was perfectly willing to murder sentient beings who were not already familiar to her. Don€™t the Zygons have a right to live as they are rather than in a shape that serves no purpose other than to make the dominant culture feel better? Don€™t they deserve the chance to honor their own heritage without needing to make it palatable to humans?
