Doctor Who Review: The Zygon Inversion – 6 Reasons Why This Story Wins The War
6. Spy Versus Spy
Claras dream world is all the more poignant for its resemblance to both Oswins self-induced hallucination from Asylum of the Daleks and the data core from Silence in the Library. Yet Clara is not one to sit around helplessly no matter if the environment surrounding her is a virtual one. Once she realizes she is able to influence Bonnies actions she takes full advantage of that fact to signal the Doctor and tell him where she is. This is Clara at her finest, a companion with a fully realized identity separate from the Doctor and able to take care of herself. Claras mental chess match with Bonnie is fascinating to watch. This brilliant piece of writing mirrors the thought processes we all go through when determining courses of action. We are constantly at war within ourselves as our reason and intellect battles with our baser natures. You cannot truly lie to yourself only willfully ignore the truth. Bonnie is so enamored by the passion of her self-righteousness that it overshadows her goals. She is drunk on power and adrenaline to the point that she no longer cares about her people but only seeks to maintain the high.
