The five writers joining Chris Chibnall are all making their series debut. The line-up reflects the showrunner’s commitment to make Doctor Who the BBC’s most inclusive show. It will be fascinating to see whether or not their diverse backgrounds and experiences significantly influence the character of the whole. Whilst new to writing for Doctor Who on television, for all five it marks the fulfilment of a long-held ambition, with at least three of them having been long term fans of the show.

The most recognisable name is former children’s Laurette Malorie Blackman, who wrote the 2013 short story The Ripple Effect featuring the seventh Doctor, but arguably the writer with the most ‘Geek’ credentials is Australian Pete McTighe. Prison drama Wentworth, a remake of cult-classic Prisoner Cell Block H, includes a number of familiar sounding episode titles – all penned by McTighe – The Girl Who Waited, Born Again, Fear Her, and Hell Bent.
