Doctor Who Seasons 1-12 Ranked Worst To Best

5. Season Twelve

Doctor Who David Tennant Tenth Doctor

Season twelve was a massive improvement on the previous series. Jodie's first series had been hit and miss, due to the enormous overhaul in absolutely every aspect. By Jodie's second series we knew her Doctor, we were accustomed to the show's new look and feel, and it jumped right in by going back to its roots and introducing some classic villains.

Spyfall started the series with a big, high-stakes spy story. By the end of its first part, it brought back the Master in a shocking twist that nobody saw coming. It was certainly a surprise of an opening and only built on that each episode.

We got to see a slightly darker side of Thirteen as she struggled with the secret of finding Gallifrey destroyed. After the criticism of season eleven having practically no arc, that was completely reversed this time. Instead we had an arc heavy series, which felt like a return to classic form which focussed on the destruction of Gallifrey and the Lone Cyberman.

The episodes touched on some important subjects and remained as political as Doctor Who ever is. It covered mental health, global warming, pollution and even gave us some perfect LGBTQ+ representation which refused to follow the "kill your gays" trope.

And we can't not mention the revelation of the fugitive Doctor and later the shocking Timeless Child reveal, which really put the Who back into Doctor Who?

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
