Doctor Who Series 10: 7 Big Questions We're Asking After 'Oxygen'

2. How Will The Doctor Get His Sight Back?

The shocking final twist that the Doctor’s sight hasn’t returned is an effective one, especially given that this is Peter Capaldi’s final series. It leaves us wondering if, when and how the Doctor will recover.

In theory the Doctor could stay blind until his next regeneration. He wouldn’t be the first lead character with the condition (Netflix’s Daredevil comes to mind). With the next episode the first of three connected adventures, it’s also possible that his sight might return at the end of episode eight as part of the resolution of the trilogy.

It would nonetheless be a daring move for the family orientated show if the Doctor’s blindness was to be a longer term issue. Perhaps it could be used to effectively challenge misconceptions and the fear of the blind experienced by many children. Certainly the Doctor’s glassy eyed appearance will have been quite frightening for the younger audience.

The Doctor has come through some very dramatic physical changes before, from a regenerating hand (The Christmas Invasion) to the effects of extreme ageing (The Last of the Time Lords). With the trailer suggesting that his regeneration energy will be activated long before the Twelfth Doctor’s final outing this Christmas, there’s a good chance that such energy will be used to heal him (as in The Christmas Invasion).
