We may not have a clue what monsters lie in wait for the Doctor and her companions, or where in time and space the TARDIS will be taking them, but one thing is clear “this is going to be fun.” The Doctor wants to make us all her best friends, to hold our hands as we step into the unknown. Part of the fun is in the not-knowing, but as we have seen, there are plenty of reasons to get excited about the next chapter in the show’s history.

A series about a time travelling alien who can travel anywhere in time and space, which has written into its DNA that ability to periodically shed its skin and start afresh, offers endless possibilities for the creative teams behind it. We can’t with any confidence second guess where exactly Chris Chibnall will be taking the series in his five year plan, but what we do know so far about series eleven suggests that a number of key principles lie behind every decision, from the recruitment of writers, cast and crew, to the careful management of the advance publicity.

Doctor Who is coming back, brighter and more optimistic than ever. It will be breaking free of the cynicism, the cliques and clichés. Instead of the shadows of the Doctor’s past hanging over its future direction, the sheer joy of a refreshed vision will light up the old, bringing a new vitality and a new reason to go back and enjoy it all over again.
