Doctor Who Series 12: Everything We Know So Far

5. A Special Episode Has Been Filmed

While Whittaker's first series didn't feature a Christmas special, it did include a New Year's Day special, and based on information acquired through a leak, we know that Series 12 will again follow a similar format.

Lee Haven Jones (who is also directing some regular episodes in the upcoming series) has been listed as the director of the special, with his online CV stating that he "shot the Doctor Who Christmas special in 2019". The reference to Christmas was later removed, but thanks to the power of screenshots, we have that original version immortalised.

So what does this mean, exactly? Does that bit about Christmas mean that the episode will actually air in December, and we'll get a surprise announcement soon? Doctor Who episodes can be turned around pretty quickly so that wouldn't be out of the question, and a rumour reported by the Radio Times did say that the BBC planned to air a special before Series 12 starts properly.

However, it's more likely that Haven Jones was stating that he literally shot the episode in 2019, and the mention of Christmas was just a label. Even still, the episode could air on New Year's Day 2020, occupying the early January slot held by Series 11's special, or it could even be pushed to the festive season after that. Whatever the case, expect Series 12 to have an extra eleventh episode!
