Doctor Who Series 12: Everything We Know So Far

4. Yaz Will Get More Time In The Spotlight

One of the problems with Series 11 was the fact that companion Yaz was woefully underdeveloped. Aside from Demons of the Punjab - which focused on her family history - she basically had nothing important to do, and felt borderline useless for the majority of the episodes.

This issue was partly down to the fact that the series focused heavily on Ryan and Graham's troubled relationship following the death of Grace. As a result, a lot of fans were left wondering whether Series 12 will do more to justify Yaz's inclusion on Team TARDIS, and according to Chibnall himself... it will.

At an early screening of Resolution, the showrunner was asked about the future of the character, and whether or not she will be given more of a storyline in Series 12 - a question that he replied to in the affirmative:

“That’s a really good question. I think that some of these questions may be answered in the forthcoming season. I think that’s the first teaser of the series! Really good question!”

While nothing specific was mentioned, it does sound like Chibnall has heard some of the criticisms of Yaz, and is looking to address them in the new batch of episodes.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
