Doctor Who Series 9: 10 Things To Expect From Moffat's Last Series

8. A New Companion

Before the announcement that Moffat was leaving Doctor Who, this was the thing fans were most excited for: the replacement for Clara Oswald. Like Amy Pond and Rory Williams before her, Clara left a huge mark on the show (good or bad, depending on your opinion of her) and the new companion will certainly have some big shoes to fill. But what kind of companion will it be? Given the modern structure of the show - and indeed the show since the Tom Baker era - it is likely to be a female companion. There were rumours that the main Clara was going to be the Victorian governess, moving away from the 21st female of Nu Who. If Moffat is going to take a risk - and he has been willing before - than now might be the change. A companion from ancient Earth (more on that in a bit) or the future, or a blend of the two like Leela - a primitive descendant of a human colony that crashed on her planet years earlier. Fans love Capaldi's Doctor and given the long wait and the guaranteed series after that, audiences will be tuning in. Now is the perfect time to experiment with a different kind of companion.
