Arriving in the year 1941 in the midst of the London blitz, The Doctor and Rose meet rogue Time Agent Captain Jack Harkness. The Doctor embarks on a hunt for the child's missing Mother, in the hope she can convince the nanogenes to correct their unintentional mistake and restore the repaired humans to normal.

'The Empty Child'/'The Doctor Dances is the first story in the revival series to be written by future showrunner Steven Moffat, and features the introduction of one of Moffat's greatest contributions to the Whoniverse, Captain Jack Harkness. It also includes one of the Ninth Doctor's most iconic quotes:

Everybody lives!

The quote has carried on throughout the life of revived Doctor Who, a rallying cry for when things are going well.
