3. The Closest Thing to The Valeyard
Episode: Amy's Choice Technically, it doesn't get any darker for the Doctor than an actual manifestation of his dark side. What made the ending's reveal that much better, was that it turned the episode upside down, putting all the events that transpired into perspective. Suddenly, every one of the Dream Lord's quotes had much more of an impact. After this episode, fans can say for certain that somewhere in the Doctor's heart, he always wished that Amy would choose between him and Rory. What's fun about everything is that the Dream Lord (the Doctor himself) makes a great case for both choosing Rory or himself. With a character that is typically flawless at keeping things hidden, this raw and in-depth look at the Doctor's darkest desires is a treat for fans. P.S. The bow tie should have given it away.
