Doctor Who: The Main Inspiration Behind Each Doctor's Costume

6. The Eighth Doctor

The Eighth Doctor's costume in the 1996 TV movie emanated that Third Doctor suaveness, with actor Paul McGann bringing heaps of gravitas to the role.

For his overall look - a long cravat, buttoned-up waistcoat, sharp jacket, and trousers - costume designer Jori Woodman clearly took inspiration from some of the earlier Doctors, ditching the wild eccentricity of Five and Six entirely.

The resulting costume made the Eighth Doctor resemble American folk hero Wild Bill Hickok, which is also the in-universe reason for his outfit's look.

McGann's curly wig - covering up the shaved head that he'd acquired on a previous production, 1996's The One That Got Away - topped off the look perfectly.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
