Doctor Who: 7 Heartbreaking Moments Of The Revived Series

3. Just This Once, Everybody Lives

It's the end of Steven Moffat's first Doctor Who two-parter. The Ninth Doctor has given an answer to the haunting question of "Are you my mummy?" after reuniting a reluctant mother with her (kind of creepy) son. Fans aren't sure if Jack Harkness is making a genuine move on Rose but they're pretty sure the Doctor is jealous either way, and, most importantly, just this once, everybody lives. And that's what makes it such a horribly beautiful scene. In almost every proceeding episode someone always dies, whether it€™s just an extra or a main character that fans have been forced to feel for ahead of their untimely demise. Particularly with the Ninth Doctor, though, fans were always made to feel as though he's seen worse than our human minds could ever comprehend. Of course, his last incarnation was the War Doctor and that's enough to give anyone an ever-lasting frown, so the good things are always that much sweeter for our beloved Nine. Subsequently, rare moments such as this, in which he actually gets to save what was originally thought to be the monster, are precious. The Ninth Doctor smiles like a maniac on helium most of the time, but fans can count on one hand the number of times he's been genuinely happy. Fantastic. Here's the moment again. Just 'cause.
