Doctor Who: War Of The Sontarans Review - 7 Ups & 5 Downs

7. DOWN - The Modern Day Sontarans

Doctor Who Flux War of the Sontarans
BBC

Yes, we know we already gave the Sontarans an up, and we stand by it. They were brilliant in the Crimean plot, but they clearly sent the B-team to present day Liverpool.

Let’s run through some of the key errors of the Scouse invasion force: firstly, a battalion of around ten Sontarans fail to hit a very easy target, many times (watch it back, most of the shots aren’t even close); secondly, they are defeated by two pensioners and their woks. Thankfully Dan’s mum knows what a probic vent is, for some reason. If you wanted to make this scene a little more believable, just make it a single Sontaran. This massively undermines a species who are literally bred for warfare.

They also don’t seem to have much of a presence on the ground, not noticing Dan parking up and walking into their compound, and seemingly not a single guard at the entrance to their spaceship. Later, one of them falls for the “look, over there!” trick - you know, the species trained never to turn their back on their enemies.

We really aren’t sure what happened here, or what the point of the modern day invasion was, but we got the feeling that their hearts just weren’t in it…
