Doctor Who: War Of The Sontarans Review - 7 Ups & 5 Downs
6. UP - The Doctor Is In
This is the most exciting up on this list, in our opinion. Whatever your views on Whittaker’s previous series, it’s hard to deny that this time around she has really found her footing in the role, and the character is finally being written to suit her. We thought this last episode, but with so many plotlines, this slight rehash of The Doctor’s character wasn’t given centre stage.
This week, we are pleased to report that Thirteen was at her very best. Sassier, more confrontational, and with the confidence and authority to take full command of the situation, this angry new Doctor outmanoeuvres the Sontarans, finally using the Doctor’s gender change as a plot device, allowing her to fool the Sontarans into not realising she is The Doctor. She even bangs out the Venusian Akido this week, taking a guard out by herself, and wallops a Sontaran with a slingshot. Great stuff.
We absolutely love seeing Jodie get the writing she deserves for this character, finally playing to her strengths after so long. What a huge relief. Can we give this a double up?
