Doctor Who: William Hartnell’s 10 Best Episodes

2. The Keys of Marinus

Doctor Who Keys Of Marinus

Episode: Season 1, Episode 5

Companions: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman

The TARDIS lands on the planet Marinus where the crew meets a man named Arbitan, the keeper of the Conscience. The Conscience is a machine that eliminated all 'evil" thought, and kept justice throughout the planet. However, Yartek leader of the Voord discovered how to resist it. The Voord are determined to take control of the Conscience and use it to their advantage. Arbitan fixes the Conscience, but needs the five keys of Marinus to turn it on. To this end, he has the Doctor and his crew set on this mission, with the TARDIS being returned to them when they have completed their task. The five keys lie at different points on the planet, and the crew are given travel dials set to teleport to the locations of each different key. Though the task seems simple, it's obviously far from it. In this episode, like "The Chase," many different stories lie underneath the grand plot. Each episode entails a problem having to be solved, or a code to be cracked. In one case the crew must overthrow a hypnotic brain like creature before searching for their key. This episode is truly adventurous to say the least, and if you started watching William Hartnell, this is the episode that you accept him as a Doctor.
