Doom Patrol Season 1: 8 Ups And 1 Down
5. Up: Notable Production Value/Design
Fans have grown accustomed to most comic book shows having 'fine, not great' production values with the Arrowverse properties, so they expected about the same with Doom Patrol. However, outside of the occasionally-iffy blob effects with Rita, the show does a great job of masking any limited budget. Through the continued use of practical effects whenever possible, DP maintains a sharply-cinematic look that rarely drops below that.
All in all, the show just has a great overall aesthetic. Creative lighting, impressively-detailed sets, all of it works in service to making the show look far more professional than its counterparts. The thought and care put into the artistic side of the show are more akin to an indie passion project than a superhero network show.
Although it's unknown how expensive the show is, DP never allows itself to look cheap. Through the emphasized use of practical effects, Doom Patrol not only gives its world a sense of authenticity, but also bolsters its sense of timelessness. Whether you watch the show today or a decade from now, you can bet it'll age quite nicely.
