Doom Patrol Season 1: 8 Ups And 1 Down
4. Up: Alan Tudyk's Scene-Stealing Mr. Nobody
You've undoubtedly seen Mr. Tudyk in one project or another, but Doom Patrol finally gives him the chance to showcase his talent. Serving as central narrator and the season's big bad, Tudyk instills so much charisma, scene-chewing narcissism, and pure villainy in this character that his performance is something of a revelation. Whether he's on-screen or off, his superb vocal work carries so much energy into every episode.
Alan Tudyk seems to be having an absolute blast with the role and it makes him so entertaining to watch. You've certainly known egotistical villains, as well as psychopathic ones, but you've never seen an arrogant, self-important, meta-as-all-hell psychopath like Mr. Nobody. All of the show's events are like his own personal soap opera that he's constantly manipulating. He could've beaten Niles Caulder's group of misfits in the premiere, but that wouldn't have been satisfying. The fact that he makes everyone go through redemptive character arcs just so they're worthy to be defeated by him is delightfully different and absurd.
It's difficult to think of anyone else playing this role with such theatricality and flair. He infuses Nobody with a childlike delight of the DP's suffering rivals the Joker and a sense of importance that rivals the Riddler. It's truly a lovely combination.
