Every Classic Doctor Who Companion Ranked From Worst To Best

6. Jo Grant

Doctor Who Jo Grant
BBC

Jo Grant was primarily a companion of the Third Doctor, though also had adventures with the Second Doctor and the Eleventh Doctor, while briefly meeting the First Doctor over a computer terminal. She first met the Doctor while working as part of UNIT, while the Master used the Nestene Consciousness to send Auton warriors against Earth.

Jo had many adventures with the Doctor, encountering the Master on several of these occasions as well. She completed a Time Ram that the Doctor was unable to do which led to the Master being condemned, by the Chronovore Kronos, to 'eternal' torment. While Jo believed that the Master deserved it, the Doctor successfully got her to understand that nothing deserved eternal torment, even the Master.

She met and fell in love with Professor Clifford Jones while working with the Doctor and UNIT in Llanfairfach. The Professor reminded her of a younger version of the Doctor, who in turn felt both hurt and slighted by her show of independence. He left their engagement party after downing his champagne in one gulp, after giving her a crystal as a wedding present.

Jo would go on to have many adventures with her husband, eventually joining Sarah-Jane Smith for the supposed funeral of the Doctor years later.
