Every Classic Doctor Who Companion Ranked From Worst To Best

7. Romana I & II

Doctor Who Romana
BBC

Romana was a Time Lady who was assigned to travel with the Fourth Doctor as they searched for the Key to Time. The White Guardian assigned her, with K9 Mark II, to help the Time Lord, though the Black Guardian began to hunt the pair. The Doctor installed a randomiser in the TARDIS so that even they wouldn't know their next destination, hoping to evade the evil Guardian.

Romana was a young and relatively inexperienced Time Lady when she met the Doctor, roughly one hundred and twenty-five years old. While there are differing accounts as to why she regenerated, including one account that says she did it on a whim to prevent the Doctor from calling her dull, she took the appearance of Princess Astra of Atrios.

She continued to travel with the Doctor into E-Space, where the pair met Adric, who would quickly become a companion in the TARDIS. Romana elected to remain in E-Space after the Doctor and Adric chose to return to N-Space. She would eventually return from this dimension to ascend through the ranks of Gallifrey, becoming Lady President before the Last Great Time War.
