Every Doctor Who Series Opener - Ranked Worst To Best

7. The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar

Doctor Who The Impossible Astronaut
BBC

Into the great openers now, this two parter gives us the return of Davros, Skaro and Missy no less. What's not to like?

Even though we have seen Dalek and Davros stories a million times before, there is something really entertaining about the conversations between the Twelfth Doctor and his arch-nemesis. In addition Michelle Gomez as Missy gets plenty of time to shine and her partnership with Clara, provides some great comic relief.

Some of Capaldi's most memorable moments can be found in these two episodes, particularly him using Davros' chair and quipping: "Anyone for dodgems?" It's a laugh out loud moment and his entrance into the medieval arena on a tank, while playing the electric guitar, is embedded in fans' minds.

It's not all perfect though. The story, while compelling, is a little slow, and the sonic sunglasses were a pretty big misstep. But given how Series 9 would end with the controversial Hell Bent, this opener stands the test of time.
