Every Doctor Who Series Opener - Ranked Worst To Best
8. Spyfall
Who fans' pleas for a return to multi-part stories after Series 11 were addressed, with the most recent opener, Spyfall Part 1 and 2. But like most of his episodes, showrunner Chris Chibnall makes everything feel like a jumbled mess.
There are a lot of great elements, like Stephen Fry, Graham using laser shoes, white silhouette looking aliens, Lenny Henry as a bad guy, Ada Lovelace and Noor Inayat Khan, Paris during World War Two, Yaz and Ryan becoming spies, and of course the unexpected return of The Master! Individually all of this is pretty awesome but not all of it gels together.
Series 12 on the whole has suffered badly from showing off too many locations and characters and not focusing on telling a cohesive story.
The Master twist, in tandem with Sacha Dhawan's energetic performance as the evil Time Lord, elevates Spyfall, but it's not enough to get it to the top half of Series openers.
