Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best

38. Tenacious D

The show that made stars out of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, Tenacious D’s brief tenure on HBO was a real labour of love. Created by the two band members alongside Mr Show’s David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, the guys made just six episodes across a three-year time span, indulging in their every whim in a blend of music and freewheeling comedy.

The total freedom given over to the D can lead to some bagginess as Black and Gass follow whatever whim entertains them at the time, but for the most part it’s a successful series. The episodes are loose and varied. Some are built around little more than a spat between the two guys; others feature gunfire and sasquatch (a cameo by John C Reilly).

The main event is the music - each episode features several songs, usually culminating with Tenacious D performing onstage, often hilariously recapping the events we’ve just seen.

It’s not to everyone’s taste - this is surreal comedy delivered in a brash fashion - but if you’re down with the D and have only sampled their music or the watered down presentation of the feature film, the HBO series is the pure stuff.
