Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best

35. Random Acts Of Flyness

This award winning comedy is one of the most singular sketch shows in recent memories. Terence Nance created, writes, and stars in Random Acts Of Flyness, and it’s clearly his vision throughout. The show Nance presents is like stepping inside his head and listening to him opine on modern society, crack jokes, tell stories, and sometimes invite his celebrity pals around.

Witness the cameo from Mad Men’s Jon Hamm in episode one, playing an information spokesman for a product which, when applied to the temples, eradicates any white thoughts. Hamm and all the special guests involved are hilarious, let off the leash by Nance and his poetic style.

Nance’s focus isn’t always on the joke, which sets it apart from similar sketch shows for good and ill. As fascinating as his distinct style is, it can feel at times like a little more structure wouldn’t go amiss, and a few sketches do simply fizzle out.

Still, there’s no denying the impressive impact of Nance’s authorship, and his world is a fun if sometimes discombobulating one to spend time in.
