Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best
34. Togetherness
If you’re familiar with any of the myriad films written and/or directed by the Duplass brothers, you’ll know roughly what to expect here, and probably whether or not you’re going to enjoy it. The Duplass boys deal in low stakes but closely observed depictions of ordinary life, with a wry comedic style and loose, often improvisational filmmaking.
Mumblecore proves to be a great fit for the small screen, with Togetherness’ 16 episodes giving an ample canvas on which to paint the story of a small family and the folk in their orbit. Mark Duplass and the always excellent Melanie Lynskey are the husband and wife at the show’s core, and they present an impressively intimate and realistic portrayal of marriage with all its ups and downs.
This isn’t a show for those in search of a thrill ride, or big belly laughs, but if you’ve enjoyed modern American indie cinema over the past decade and change, this is likely to be up your street.
