3. The Night Of
Just like True Detective before it, The Night Of seemingly emerged out of nowhere to become the show everyone had to see. The Night Of – which is based on a BBC drama called Criminal Justice – follows a man arrested for murder, and given that he can’t remember what happened he might not be so innocent.
The show is a superbly written drama, and tells a story with a compelling beginning, middle and end. John Turturro rightly received all the raves for his turn as unconventional lawyer John Stone, but it’s Riz Ahmed playing the accused who is the real heart of the story. It’s also beautifully shot, which gives it a nice moody atmosphere, and plenty of story twists to keep you guessing.
Apparently, the show might get a second season despite being given a definitive ending; if they do continue, hopefully they’ll avoid the dreaded True Detective curse.
