2. Westworld
HBO were probably feeling worried about Game Of Thrones coming to an end within the next couple of years, and that no natural successor had emerged. True Detective burned out after two seasons, and Vinyl didn’t even get that far.
Thank god for Westworld then, an addictive brew of cerebral sci-fi, great acting and smart writing. They clearly spared no expense either, with a starry cast and pricey sets. It only took viewers a couple of episodes to become hooked, and quickly fan theories about The Man In Black or the location of The Maze started to spread online.
Great as the show is, it sometimes felt like the characters took second place to the story twists, which gave it a slightly cold feeling. Given the nature of the story, though, maybe this was intentional. Sadly we’ll have to wait until 2018 to see what happens next, but if the reception so far is any clue, HBO has their new trophy title.
