After the disappearance of Steve Rogers, the US government looked to bring in a new Captain America. Unfortunately, they didn’t exactly look past the physical attributes. John Walker was a great soldier, and he had the blonde hair and blue eyes, but little else would qualify him to carry that shield.

Tired of getting his arse kicked, John eventually took the super soldier serum, and when Lemar was killed, he flipped and murdered a Flag Smasher - not even the one that took his friend’s life. This left him without the Captain America title, and without a shield.

A conversation with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine showed him that his days as a superhero weren’t necessarily over, and gave him the idea that he could just make his own shield. This is exactly what he did in the episode five post-credits scene.

This was a clear nod to the character’s future as US Agent. Though he did return in the final episode of the series in something of a fight for redemption, the shield didn’t exactly hold up to the one made of vibranium. Luckily, Val kitted him out with a new costume that he'll get to show off in Thunderbolts.
