Every Star Trek Series Ranked Worst To Best
4. Picard
When news broke that Patrick Stewart was returning to the role of Picard, Trek fans lost their minds globally. This was the news that they had been waiting for since 2002 - finally, a post Star Trek Nemesis show was coming. Finally, a chance to see what had been happening with all of our favourite characters. What the fans received was something very different from what came before. The show attempts to walk a line between optimism and the dark pessimism that crept in around the time of Enterprise and the result is debatable.
There is much to love in Picard's freshman year. There is a compelling mystery and the effects are stunning. The opening shot of the Enterprise D delivered chills and the return of Stewart to the role was a true joy. However, the season fell into some of the same issues as Discovery. While this was very much not the Next Generation - perfectly acceptable - it didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. Should it be quiet and contemplative?
If so, it raced forward at breakneck pace, featuring action for action sake. Should then it be a Sci-Fi opera, the likes of Discovery? If so, it spent too much time mired in lore. The fallout was that the show, while certainly delivering many excellent moments and new characters, stumbled through its first season. The acting though is stellar and the final scene between Jean Luc and Data pushed the series up a couple of ranks.
With some luck, season two will continue a positive trend.
