Family Guy: 10 Most Controversial Moments
2. Partial Terms Of Endearment
The subject of abortion is not the kind of thing you can just waltz into and expect to come out unscathed. No matter what direction you choose to go in, you'll be swept up in the polarising viewpoints of at least one side of the argument, and that's pretty much what happened here.
"Partial Terms Of Endearment" wasn't just one scene or cutaway's worth of controversy; it was an entire episode. The narrative centred on Lois as she agreed to become a surrogate mother for a couple, but after they died in a plane crash, she debated whether she should keep the child or abort it.
The outing itself (while taking some liberties and making a crude joke here and there) certainly didn't shy away from being an honest and genuine discussion on the subject. It chose a clear side (pro-choice), but through the guise of comedy, bring attention to the debate.
It's no surprise that this one was so reviled, as the subject matter sparks outrage wherever it goes. As a result, it was banned from TV and released on DVD instead.
