Family Guy: 10 Most Controversial Moments
1. Turban Cowboy
If there's anything to learn from this list, it's that Family Guy might be a hilarious show, but its handling of sensitive material is often problematic. Well, here's an episode on terrorism, so strap yourselves in.
"Turban Cowboy" depicts the events after Peter falls in with a gang of Islamic terrorists. Of course, the offensive representation of Middle-Eastern people is vulgar here and made the show feel decades out of date. There are so many jokes at the expense of Muslim people that watching the episode is more likely to make you cringe than laugh.
Then, to make matters worse, a real tragedy would also add more fuel to the fire, as a cutaway gag in this outing showed Peter driving his car through the Boston Marathon. This was only one month before the Boston Marathon bombings, making this episode retrospectively disrespectful to those who lost their lives, no matter how accidental.
Crossing into this area was probably the wrong choice for this show that, while hilarious, often struggles with subtlety.
