The Flash: 19 Easter Eggs And References You Have To See

4. Iris West

Besides being able to run really fast and the red outfit, Iris West is one of the most integral parts of The Flash's character. She first appeared in 1956's Showcase #4, the same issue that Barry Allen made his debut. There have been some changes to the character in the leap to television, which should probably be covered before everyone dies head first into the absolute insanity that is her original character biography (because comic books): all the stuff about her and Barry being raised almost like they were brother and sister - bit gross - is all new, as is her employment at the Jitters cafe, as is her dad the police man, as is her ethnicity, the latter of which has thankfully been barely commented upon. Because it's not important, is it? Anyway, with these changes they've either also been leaving out a lot of stuff from the comic book Iris West, or else they're waiting to introduce all of them later on. In which case, The Flash might end up being the most insane show on television. In her first appearance, Iris is a reporter for Central City's Picture News, and is already dating Barry Allen. She eventually marries him, completely unaware of his secret identity, and discovers that he's The Flash (and that her nephew Wally is Kid Flash) on their wedding night, when he talks in his sleep and reveals it. Woops. The crazy part, though, is that it turns out Iris was born in the 30th Century and sent back in time to marry Barry. Time travel looks like it's gonna be part of The Flash going forward, so it could happen!
